Project Description:
This 298’ tall cast in place air traffic control tower at Dulles International Airport was McClone Construction’s first project in the Mid-Atlantic region. The lower 237’ was composed of architectural exposed white concrete with approximately 8,000 lineal feet of reveal.
The base dimensions of the tower are 32’-5”x 32’-5” square with 5’ beveled corners. The wall forming system was designed using company owned equipment in combination with and a rented, aluminum jump-forming system. Slab on metal deck was used at the lower intermediate levels every 12’-4” up through the 19th floor.
Above the 19th floor are five levels of cast in place suspended slabs. Platforms were fabricated and attached to the tower walls to provided a means of forming the large cantilevered slabs which extended as far as 19’-7” from the outside face of the tower walls. The wall configuration dramatically changes at the corners of the 19th floor to a large corbel like condition and again at the 20th to provide support for the cantilevered slabs above. Company owned handset equipment was used to form the cast-in-place mild-steel suspended slab at the upper levels.
Stand alone columns provide support for the 22nd, 23rd and 24th floor suspended slabs. Metal stairs and an elevator provide access for the airport control staff to the upper operational levels
